Picket Duty

If you have picket duty coming up or need to check in regarding your picket duty, please contact us at memberservices@teamsters2785.org or call us at (415)467-0450.

Picketing is a longstanding practice of protest engaged in by Teamsters Local 2785.  When we picket, we are helping our Teamster Brothers and Sisters stand against unfair labor practices of a specific company or industry.

WHY WE PICKET

1. We are living in a new era of labor relations in which employers are not only resisting contract improvements, but are trying to take away conditions that we have fought hard to secure. We are also faced with the problem, as all Unions are, of un-organized companies which are undercutting wages and working conditions of our organized employees.  We need to organize their competition.
2. Maintaining our strength with our employers under contract and organizing the Non-Union Employers requires a total UNION COMMITMENT. This means that YOU as a member must participate in our picketing, leafletting and consumer boycott activities.  Fortunately, we are able to accomplish such programs if each member gives ONLY ONE DAY PER YEAR TO THIS EFFORT. If you prefer to pay the assessment and not give up the day, such money will be used to maintain the picketing program.

3. This is a small sacrifice. IT WILL BRING GREATER UNITY to the Local and reflect itself in better wages, conditions of work and greater job protection.

Below are the bylaws that govern our picketing process.  Every member must either engage in picket duty or contribute a small picket assessment, a minimum of 1 time per year.
PICKET DUTIES
Full Time Members: Under the collective bargaining agreement, full time members shall make themselves available 1 day annually for service to the Union which may include picket duty.  Alternatively the member may pay an assessment of $65 to the Union should they not be available for their day of service.
Part Time Members: Under the collective bargaining agreement, part time members shall make themselves available 1/2 day annually for service to the Union which may include picket duty.  Alternatively the member may pay an assessment of $15 to the Union should they not be available for their day of service.
PICKET SCHEDULE
Union service or assessment shall be scheduled on a rotating basis in accordance with Union needs until the Union roster has been exhausted. Union service or assessment will not be assessed more than 1 time per year.
PICKET POSTPONEMENT
If a member is scheduled for service or picket duty but cannot fullfil the requirement, the member may postpone service for 30 days provided 72 hour notice is given to the Union and cleared by the Union. If the member is called to serve during Vacation, sick leave or disability, the duty will be rescheduled.
